CW / MCW Morse Generator: PC Telegraphy Without COM Ports or Soldering
Greetings, colleagues! I am pleased to present a new, absolutely free, and lightweight software utility for CW operation directly from a computer — the CW / MCW Morse Generator.
The days of classic legacy programs (like the legendary CwTyp) are fading away, as modern laptops no longer feature physical COM or LPT ports, and operating systems like Windows 11 and Linux demand new software solutions. Built completely from scratch, this utility runs lightning-fast, requires no heavy frameworks or installation, and works "out of the box" on 64-bit Windows and Linux systems.
1. Who Is This Program For?
- For beginner radio amateurs: those who are not yet confident operating a straight key or a paddle, but want to conduct telegraph (CW) QSOs.
- For handheld VHF/FM operators: wanting to transmit Modulated Continuous Wave (MCW) or tone telegraphy.
- For satellite enthusiasts: including operations through geostationary satellites like the QO-100.
- For training purposes: ideal for learning Morse code and practicing copy/send skills.
2. What Is Its Purpose?
The main objective of the program is to generate a clean, ideal telegraph audio signal (Morse code) and route it through your computer's Line Out (or Headphone Jack) directly into the microphone input of your transceiver.
Key Feature: The program does NOT require a hardware PTT interface (USB/COM-port TX keying). It is specifically designed to work with the VOX (Voice Operated Transmit) function, which is available in almost every modern radio.
Detailed Interface & Workflow Overview
The program interface is divided into three logical blocks to ensure maximum convenience during a QSO. It supports English, Russian, Ukrainian, and Polish languages (the language switcher is located in the upper right corner).
Block 1: Transmission Text and Controls
This is your main workspace. Here you type the text that will be transmitted on the air.
- Text input window: Type callsigns and signal reports directly from your keyboard. The program automatically converts the text into Morse code pulses.
- Progress bar (TX Indicator): Located just below the text area. When you start transmitting, the bar shows what percentage of the current message has already been sent over the air.
- Hotkeys (Transmit / Stop buttons):
- [Spacebar] — Instantly starts transmitting the typed text. Pressing it again pauses the transmission.
- [Esc] — Emergency stop and buffer clear (indispensable if you made a typo in a callsign).
- "Clear" button: Instantly erases all text from the window, preparing it for the next QSO.
Block 2: Audio Settings & VOX
This is where you set the physical parameters of your signal.
- Audio Output: A drop-down list where you can select the specific sound card connected to your radio. By default, the program auto-detects the system's primary audio device.
- Volume: Adjusts the audio output level. Tip: Do not set it to 100% to avoid overdriving the radio's microphone input. A level around 50% is usually enough for a reliable VOX trigger.
- Audio Tone (Hz): Adjusts the sidetone pitch. The classic setting is 700 Hz, but you can tailor it to your own hearing preference.
- Speed (WPM): A slider to control the sending speed in Words Per Minute. The calculation is based on the strict international PARIS standard. The current speed is also displayed in Characters Per Minute (CPM) in the upper left corner of the window.
- "Enable VOX Preamble" Checkbox (Killer Feature!): As we know, a radio's VOX circuit kicks in with a slight delay, which often "swallows" the first letter or dot. If this checkbox is enabled, the program will send three short dits before your actual text. The first dit wakes up the radio and keys the transmitter, allowing your real text to go out over the air without losing a single character!
Block 3: Macros (Quick Messages)
An indispensable feature for conducting standard QSOs, contests, or working through satellites.
- Here you can pre-configure standard phrases (e.g.,
CQ CQ CQ DE CALLSIGN PSE KorUR RST IS 599 599 BK). - The "Send" button instantly fires the selected macro over the air.
- Macro management (icons on the right):
- Up/Down arrows — allow you to sort macros by importance.
- Pencil — edit an existing macro.
- Copy (tags icon) — allows you to paste any text into a macro, useful if you found an interesting QSO template online or in a notepad.
- Trash bin — deletes the macro.
At the very bottom, there is a quick-add panel for new macros (you just need to enter a title and the text itself).
Built-In Help
There is no need to hunt for ReadMe files in folders. By clicking the "? Help" button in the upper right corner, a window overlays the interface containing all the necessary technical information: from audio cable wiring diagrams to dit/dah timing ratios. The help manual is also fully translated into all supported languages.
How to Start Operating (Quick Start)
- Connect the Line Out (or Headphones) of your computer's audio card to the Microphone input (Mic In) of your radio using a suitable audio cable.
- Enable the VOX function in your radio's menu.
- Launch the CW / MCW Generator program.
- Set a comfortable speed (WPM) and enable the VOX preamble.
- Type some text in the main window (or select a macro) and press the Spacebar. Have a great QSO!
